Our Trip - Day 4

AND THE THE RAINS CAME!!!

It was a rainy, miserable day. Cold & windy. The anglers finished some toddy for the body!!!

The fishermen walked to the portage lake behind the cabin. Beautiful lake, but no luck.

With Day 4 slated to be the first night for walleye dinner, the fishermen began getting nervous. Troy started fishing off the dock, and quickly caught two walleye!

The fisherman were getting excited. Catching walleye meant no peanut butter and jelly for dinner!!!

Soon, Bob made his way down to the dock and caught a walleye. Uncle Raym attempted to hop into the boat to do some fishing, but fell in the Lake instead!

As the rain slowed down, the fishermen decided to venture out again to catch some dinner. We worked some of the coves and rock ledges around the cabin and toward the entrance to East Rheaume. The fishermen were finally catching walleye.

And then came the Hit Heard Around the World. Bob was jigging for walleye off the back of the boat, and then a MONSTER northern pike hit his jig (the fish was at least 42", if not larger). Bob was fighting the fish for approximately five minutes, successfully getting the fish next to the boat. Fearful the the lunker would break the line (there was no wire leader on the line at the time), Troy attempted to net the fish. THE FISH WAS TOO BIG FOR THE NET! With two shakes of his head, the fish threw the lure, and slowly swam into the depths. The fisherman were shocked at what they saw.

Content that they caught dinner, the men headed home to clean and cook their feast!

On the third day of fishing, the following fish were caught:
  • Bob - 2 pike, 3 walleye ... and the one that got away
  • Uncle Raym - 1 walleye
  • Troy - 3 pike, 5 walleye
  • Rich - o fish (did not fish due to knee injury)
  • Vern - 4 pike, 1 walleye
For breakfast, the anglers had muffins & danish. For dinner, the anglers had beer battered walleye, with rice pilaf and carrots.

Our Trip - Day 3

East Rheaume!

We decided to brave the narrows and make our way to East Rheaume. The trip was long ... 1 hour and 45 minutes the first day winding through the rocky shallows. The anglers packed their rain gear and lunch, not knowing what to expect.

Rich caught one of the first pike of the day.

HERE....FISHY, FISHY, FISHY!!!

Uncle Raym's favorite saying netted him this nice northern pike.

Troy & Dad caught two nice Northern Pike at the same time!

It was a sunny, but windy morning. In the afternoon, the rains came!!! And did it rain!!!

It downpoured almost the entire time back to the cabin.

On the second day of fishing, the following fish were caught:

  • Bob - 5 pike
  • Uncle Raym - 4 pike
  • Troy - 5 pike
  • Rich - 6 pike
  • Vern - 1 pike
For breakfast, the anglers had muffins & danish. For dinner, the anglers had spaghetti, meatballs, garlic bread and Sangria.

Our Trip - Day 2

The Arrival

We woke up early in the morning on Friday, August 3 and had breakfast at the Howey Bay Inn. We made it to Viking Outposts at 6:45, weighed our gear and settled up. We were allowed 750 lbs. in total, and came in at 737 lbs.

The trip to Lake Rheaume was incredible. Rich sat in the co-pilot's chair (HE FELL ASLEEP!!!) and the rest of the anglers sat in the back. The flight took approximately one hour, and we arrived around 8:15 AM. We settled into the camp, and made it out on the lake by 9:30 AM. What a beautiful lake!

We spent the day on Lake Rheaume. The weather was gorgeous. Troy, Uncle Raym & Bob fished in one boat, and Rich & Vern fished in the other. Troy caught the first pike of the trip.

Vern caught the first walleye of the trip.

On the first day of fishing, the following fish were caught:

  • Bob - 8 pike, 1 walleye
  • Uncle Raym - 7 pike
  • Troy - 4 pike
  • Rich - 2 pike
  • Vern - 1 walleye.
For dinner, the anglers had Brats, Burgers & Dawgs, with onions and green peppers, and herb roasted potatoes.

Our Trip - Day 1

Getting to Red Lake, Ontario was an adventure!

The trip started on August 3, 2006. Uncle Raym departed from Wisconsin bright and early in the morning. The GOAL...to meet up with the guys in International Falls, Minnesota, and then travel to Red Lake, Ontario.

Troy was supposed to fly out of Philadelphia, PA. Dad, Rich and Vern were supposed to fly out of Tampa. The group would meet up in Minneapolis, MN, and then take a commuter flight into Red Lake, Ontario.

Troy's flight was delayed out of Philadelphia, PA ... and the connection flight was in jeopardy ... fortunately, due to delays in the connection flight, the group met as planned and made it to Red Lake at approximately 6:30 PM (2 hour delay).

The group left International Falls, MN at 6:30 PM. Troy, Vern & Rich rode in the rental car (a full-size cargo van), and Dad & Uncle Raym rode in the Jeep Liberty. Going through the border was effortless.

The trip to Red Lake, Ontario itself was LONG, but interesting. The trip itself took approximately 5 hours, 15 minutes, with the group stopping for a coffee break along the way.

The passengers kept a watchful eye for moose or other animals. Along the way, the group saw 2 moose, 4 fox, and one deer.

We also saw hundreds of rock pilings along the road, which apparently were used by indians as a way to mark the trail.
